According to a new study, India has remained one of the most popular sources of spam or junk mail in June while Brazil has returned to the second position with an increase of 4.4% points compared to May.
The volume of the spam in mail traffic increased slightly compared to May and averaged at 83.3% with the most popular topics being Osama Bin Laden’s death, the last Harry Potter movie and the death anniversary of Micheal Jackson.
A considerable increase was noticed in the amount of phishing attacks on social networks with Habbo and Facebook increasing by 6.25% and 4.07% respectively. The experts at Kaspersky predict a surge of spam linked to Google+. According to Maria Namestnikova, Senior Spam Analyst at Kaspersky Lab, "We expect an increase in unsolicited emails exploiting the new Google social network. They will most likely contain both phishing links and malicious code”.
Japan meanwhile became the latest world power to combat the distribution of unwanted emails at the legislative level with the creation, distribution, purchase and storage of malicious programs being declared as a criminal offence in the country.
